The home energy upgrade journey

To start, a home survey (Retrofit Assessment) will be carried out to see how suitable your home is for an energy upgrade. It helps your landlord understand what’s possible and which upgrades may be needed in your home. (Not all homes will be suitable for upgrades) Time it takes: 2-3 hours.

If your home is suitable, we’ll invite you to join your local home energy upgrade programme. We’ll walk you through what it’s all about, how it works, and how it may lower your electricity bills.

We’ll need to confirm a few final details, like whether you have a smart meter and how much electricity you currently use. This helps us to make sure you’ll get the most out of the upgrades in your home.

An assessor will visit your home to carry out an installation survey, which will help plan where the technology will go. Every home is different, so we’ll work with you to find the best setup for your space. Time it takes: 2-3 hours.

We will be on hand for any additional questions and guide you through signing the contract, switching your electricity supplier (to the lower cost electric supplied by your landlord) and preparing you and your home for the install.

What’s installed

As part of your home energy upgrade, your home will get smart green technology to help cut your electricity costs and be kinder to the planet. You’ll get solar panels to make green energy, and a battery to store it for later. Extra super power? The battery can also buy energy from the grid when it’s cheap, so you keep saving, even when the sun’s not shining.

Billing made easy

One simple monthly bill. Each month, you’ll get a single electricity bill that covers all the electricity you use, whether it comes from the solar panels or the grid. Shows how much electricity you used that month, plus the savings you made.

Tariff Talk

As part of your home energy upgrade, you’ll be on a two-rate electricity tariff. This means the price you pay depends on when you use energy. Electricity costs more during the day, when demand is higher, and less overnight, when fewer people are using it.

Kinder on your pocket

Your landlord sets the tariff, designed to be cheaper, so you’re already saving.

Our friendly customer team is on hand to answer questions, explain your bill, and guide you through every step, whether you need a quick chat or a bit more support. And if life throws something unexpected your way, we’ve got flexible options to make things easier.

Stuff you might wonder

This programme is designed to run for at least 25 years. When you join, you’re signing up for an initial period agreed with your landlord. After that, you can choose to continue or opt out if it no longer works for you. In this time, your electricity tariff and payment schedules will be reviewed on a regular basis based on your electrical use. Just a heads-up, leaving means you’ll lose access to the benefits and customer support the energy programme provides. Depending on your landlord’s terms, there may also be an exit fee when you leave, so it’s worth checking what applies to your agreement.

As part of your local home energy upgrade, your home will be fitted with smart, green technology including solar panels, home battery, connectivity hub, Sub meter and a grid smart meter (which you may have already in your home).

Depending on how the technology in your home was funded, it will be owned by your landlord or an external funder… or a bit of both. Information specific to you and your home will be detailed in your terms and conditions.

To give your home the energy upgrades and cheaper, greener electricity, your landlord buys electricity from an approved supplier and combines it with power generated on-site from solar panels. This mix means you benefit from clean energy produced locally, alongside grid electricity, all managed for you so it’s simple and cost-effective.

You do not need to do anything with your technology, we will set up the system in the background to make sure your home is making the most of low cost times and the solar power available to you. You do need to pay Sero for your electricity.
